What Really Causes Allergies
60
Are you allergic to pollen? Are you allergic to strawberries? Do your eyes start watering and itching, or do you break out in a rash? It actually isn’t the substance that you are allergic to that is causing this. It is actually your immune systems response to the substance that is causing the problem.
When you have an allergy to something, and you come into contact with it, your immune system sees it as an enemy, and starts attacking. This is what causes the actual symptoms. Therefore, you might surmise that the problem is in your immune system when you have an allergy. The symptoms often come from natural histamine that your body produces, in response to what it views as a danger to your body.
Of course, you have no real control over your immune system, or how it reacts to certain substances that you come into contact with. What you can control, however, is your contact with those substances, if you know that your immune system perceives them as bad things. You could avoid strawberries. You can avoid certain medications. You can avoid many things that you know that you are allergic to.
However, because we do not stay isolated in our homes, as a general rule, you will often come into contact with substances that your immune system doesn’t like when you are out in the world. Things like dust, pollen, insects, perfumes, and other things are often hard to avoid when you are out in the world. You have no control over how well your accountant’s office is dusted. You have no control over pet dander that is in someone else’s home.
Because of this, you need to always be on the lookout for the symptoms that your immune system presents you with, so that you can take the appropriate action as soon as possible. In some allergy cases, taking action immediately can mean the difference between life and death. In other cases, it means the difference between long periods of discomfort, and short periods of discomfort.
Often, once you’ve been exposed to the substance, just getting away from it isn’t enough to stop the symptoms. You need to have a plan in place for getting your allergy symptoms under control. For this, you need to discuss your allergy with your doctor. Your doctor will be a valuable resource in helping you find ways to deal with your allergy symptoms, when they occur.
