Prostate is the gland below man’s bladder that control urination and produce certain components of semen. As a man grows older the size of prostate gland enlarges narrowing urethra causing problems in urination. There are three major prostate problems among men that can be identified with the associated symptoms. If a man over 40 has any of these symptoms then he must go for prostate check up.
- BPH: Symptoms like difficulty in urination, weak flow of urine, frequent urination and excessive urination may be associated with problems due to enlargement of prostate known as ‘benign prostate hyperplasia’. BPH is a natural phenomenon that happens with age and can be treated with medicines or surgery.
- Prostatitis: If there is burning sensation during urination, pain in urination or ejaculating associated with frequent urination and pain in pelvic area then the affected man may be having Prostatitis. In this case the prostate gets inflamed or swelled from bacterial infection or any other reason. The problems may be acute or chronic. In case of acute Prostatitis the problems surface suddenly while a chronic patient experiences recurrent attack. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics if the cause of problem is bacteria.
- Prostate Cancer: When difficulty in urination is associated with burning sensation or blood in urine and pains in ejaculation then the affected man should go for a check to find if the prostate gland has enlarged. If clinical examinations reveal that the prostate is enlarged with presence of lump in it then the affected man have high chance of prostate cancer. In advanced stages nodes or lumps are also found in pelvic region and spine resulting in pain in these region. In advanced stage of the disease the affected person can have pain in abdomen and chest or jaundice. Genetic factors and growing age are prime risk factors. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is the screening test to detect prostate cancer.
There are no established preventive measures to prevent prostate problems. However, it is imperative to go for a prostate check up when urinary difficulties arises frequently. Earlier the detection, sooner the remedy. All prostate problems can be effectively treated.
